kernel 2.4 is missing some functionality that 2.2 has, so background
execution is not possible. You need to compile svgalib without
background support in order to use it with kernel 2.4. Edit the file
Makefile.cfg to comment out the BACKGROUND=Y line. This is the
default from svgalib-1.4.3 and later
