Yes, that fixed it. (And Doom doesn't crash any more either.)

Where would I have to make changes to disable them at compile time?
There's still some modes that are stretching in one direction only,
(most notably 320x240 15/16bpp which doubles every line and therefore
looks like 320x480) resulting in a squashed screen when eg. MPlayer
calls them.
